At 11:11 pm EST on Friday, August 16, MJ Bridges made the final payment on his last credit card––a five and a half year journey that has resulted in him paying off a total of $96,942 in consumer debt.

His journey is already admirable and inspiring, but this part will blow your mind: he paid off nearly a quarter of his debt––$26,058.57 to be exact––by charging e-scooters (Bird, Lime, etc) after work!

For nine months, (from November 8, 2018-August 16, 2019), the 31-year-old high school math teacher in Atlanta would charge an average of 20 Bird and Lime e-scooters a day, earning an extra income of $2,500-$3,000 per month. He used his earnings to pay down his debts.

The Alabama State University graduate is clearly not afraid of hard work. When he first began his debt free journey in January 2014, he was so determined to become free from the slavery of debt that he worked four jobs: his 9-5 as a high school math teacher, two tutoring jobs after school and on weekends, and a late night weekend job as a busboy at a nightclub. He kept up this grueling schedule for 15 months straight.

By October 2018, he had managed to pay off about 3/4 of his debt, but he still had around $30,000 left. One night he was out running and saw a guy throwing e-scooters in the back of a truck. He asked the man what he was doing, and the guy explained that he was charging the scooters for around $5 each. MJ immediately went home and watched a few YouTube videos about charging e-scooters as a side hustle. Nine months and $26,000 later, he is officially debt free!

Congratulations, MJ, on your amazing achievement. You have inspired so many people and we can't wait to see what's next for you.
